Apple takes inspiration from MacBook Pro for updated MacBook

Apple’s new MacBook update finds the notebook borrowing a few things from its bigger brother. Like the MacBook Pro, the new MacBook features a unibody enclosure, albeit polycarbonate instead of aluminum, an LED-backlit display, a glass multi-touch trackpad, and a built-in battery designed to deliver up to seven hours of battery life.


Its unibody construction gives the new MacBook a sturdier feel than previous plastic models, and Apple has also added a non-skid soft-touch rubber covering to the bottom of the unit to stop it sliding every which way when sitting on one's lap. Not only does the unibody enclosure provide a more durable MacBook, it is also lighter, weighing in at 4.7lbs (2.1kg) compared to the previous model’s 5.1lbs. And unlike the MacBook Pro’s edge-to-edge glass display, the 13.3-inch LED-backlit 1280 x 800 resolution glossy screen is set inside a plastic bezel.


The unibody enclosure means replacing the battery will most likely mean a trip to an Apple authorized repairer, but Apple claims the built-in battery has a lifetime nearly three times that of conventional notebook batteries with its ability to last up to 1,000 recharge cycles.


The new MacBook also sports some pretty nice spec bumps, with a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics. However, the same can’t be said for the ports, with the notable absence of a FireWire port, SD card slot or dedicated line-in jack. Instead, users will have to make do with two USB ports, combined audio line-in/out port, Mini DisplayPort and Gigabit Ethernet port.

Acer Timeline 1820p laptop with multi-touch display coming soon

Remember the Acer Timeline 1810 netbook we told you about sometime back? Well, looks like Acer is all set to unveil a new version of the said netbook, dubbed as the Timeline 1820p. The most interesting thing about the upcoming laptop is that it'll boast of a multi-touch display, a convertible one.

Toshiba's Satellite T100 Series laptops charge while they sleep

Toshiba's new middleweight T100 Series laptops will hit shelves on October 22, coinciding with the release of Windows 7. Both the 11.6 inch and 13.3-inch models come in at under 4 pounds and feature a LED backlit widescreen displays, built-in webcam with face recognition, HDMI port, up to 9 hours of battery life and the company's very useful "Sleep-and-Charge" technology, which lets you power up portable devices when the laptop is turned off.


The 13.3-inch Satellite T135 and the smaller T115 both run on Windows® 7 Home Premium operating system, use DDR3 RAM and feature 802.11b/g/n wireless. The hard drives - which start at 250GB (5400 RPM) - are protected by Impact Sensor technology which detects sudden movement and “parks” the heads of the HDD to minimize any damage before the laptop hits the floor.

Five new Alienware PCs invade the gaming market with aggressive looks and specs

Demanding PC gamers could soon see their wildest dreams come true with the five new Alienware gaming rigs — a laptop and four desktop PCs — recently presented by Dell. Alienware M15x laptop

It is indeed quite an impressive machine: in its standard configuration it features an Intel mobile Core i7 720QM processor, 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M GPU, 3GB DDR3 @ 1.066 GHz, personalized plaque and real "badass" looks for USD$1,499.

However, the M15x also offers a myriad of configuration options including, among other things, 8BG RAM, a 256GB solid state drive, a 9-cell Li-ion battery for greater autonomy, dual layer Blu-ray burner, a 15.6-inch WideFHD 1920x1080 WLED display (the standard option being a "mere" 1600x900 WLED), and an even faster i7 920XM processor.

When those accessories are added to the package the price quickly skyrockets to USD$4,449 which — needless to say — is more than the average gamer can afford. But the standard configuration is arguably more than enough to satisfy performance-hungry gamers which, of all the additions listed above, will probably find the USD$100 9-cell battery upgrade (the default choice for the M17x) the most useful.


One last thing of note is the M15x's Stealth Mode, which can be turned on by pressing a simple button located directly above the keyboard and reduces CPU and GPU output to achieve a 65W power limit for decreased noise and improved battery life.


The Alienware desktop lineup

If performance-to-cost ratio is what you're looking for, the obvious choice is to opt for a desktop computer. Dell knows this very well and decided to develop not one, but four high-performance, liquid-cooled and overclocked desktop PCs aimed at extremely demanding gamers, professional video editors and 3D animators.

The Aurora and its "big brother" Aurora ALX are again high-performance, highly configurable machines featuring the latest Intel Core i7 processor. Optional features include an Extreme Edition i7 processor overclocked to 3.6GHz, up to 24GB DDR3 @ 1.33GHz memory or 12GB DDR3 @ 1.6GHz memory for a price tag starting at USD$1,299.

Finally, the Area-51 and Area-51 ALX represent the very best of the gamut and are designed for extremely powerful performance. The Intel Core i7 was overclocked to 3.86GHz, while the package includes the quad-GPU dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 graphic card, up to 24GB of memory, and six hard drive bays that support 7,200 and 10,000RPM drives for prices beginning at USD$1,999.

HP Mini 311 and Compaq Mini 311c NVIDIA Ion based netbooks leaked

Remember we'd told you about the upcoming HP Mini 311 (pictured above) and Compaq Mini 311c netbooks a week ago? Looks like HP is moving pretty swiftly with its newest babies and is all set to go official with them in coming weeks.


Though both of them sports different designs, as far as specification is concerned they're all same. In Europe it'll be branded as the Compaq Mini 311c while in the rest of the world it'll be known as Mini 311c.


According to a leak on Notebook Italia, these netbooks are based on NVIDIA's ION platform, and feature 11.6" widescreen display.

Other features include Intel Atom N270 processor (1.6GHz), 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 11.6" LED LCD display, webcam, 5in1 card reader, 802.11bg wireless, 3x USB ports, Ethernet, Bluetooth, HDMI, VGA, and Windows XP.

No word on exact pricing, but they should cost no more than $500.

Acer's Congo-based 11.6-inch Ferrari One: finally, a netbook with speed

We've seen a couple of netbooks that we'd actually consider to be mildly quick, but given that locating an Ion-based netbook is about as easy as entering North Korea with a US passport, we haven't had much of a chance to really love on 'em.


Today, Acer is extending its boutique Ferrari lineup with the Ferrari One, an 11.6-inch machine that is among the first to rely on AMD's newly announced Congo platform. Packed within the chassis is a dual-core 1.2GHz Athlon X2 L310 CPU, ATI's Radeon 3200 graphics, an XPG port for connecting an external graphics solution, a 1,366 x 768 panel, WiFi, Bluetooth, optional WWAN and a 6-cell battery. You'll also notice AMD Vision and Windows 7 badges alongside the obligatory prancing pony, but you can bet you'll be paying dearly for this when it ships on (surprise, surprise) October 22nd. How dearly? Try £435 ($724), or roughly the cost of a single lug nut on an F430.

Dell Vostro 2510 NoteBook - First Look Reviews

Dell Vostro 2510: The 15.4-inch system marks a few key changes from the outgoing 1510 and comes in a two-tone black and red body instead of the more conservative exterior of the old system. It also switches to a slot-load drive like that of the Studio 15 and uses a new cooling system that vents heat away from the bottom of the notebook to make it more comfortable on its owner's lap.


In spite of the outside changes, the system is similar in most respects to the 1510 and uses current-generation Core 2 Duo processors up to 2.6GHz rather than Centrino 2-era components; new among the expansion options is a slot-load Blu-ray burner for both making large backups as well as playing HD movies.


Dell doesn't yet allow purchasing the system but says a minimum configuration will have a 1440x900 resolution display with a built-in webcam, a GeForce 8400M GS for video and a 160GB hard disk. Custom orders can boost the system to a 1920x1200 display and 320GB of disk space. A sample $899 model revealed as part of the last-minute leak also suggests a minimum 2GB of memory when the system ships sometime in August.

ASUS EeeTop PC ET20/22 confirmed at last

If you need computing power but space is at a premium and you don't want to opt for a laptop or netbook, then an all-in-one PC might just be the answer you are looking for. After months of eager anticipation, Taiwan's ASUS has finally confirmed the technical specifications for its solution for the space-conscious non-mobile computer user - the EeeTop 20/22 series. They'll be super fast full HD graphics on a touchscreen 20in or 22in screen, a built-in webcam, wireless keyboard and mouse and the option of a Blu-ray player and even more squeezed into one classy chassis.


These new all-in-one's took their first tentative dip into the pool of IT media frenzy at this year's CeBit in Germany, which is billed as the world's largest IT trade fair. Frustratingly, there was a distinct lack of detail though and news since has been somewhat thin on the ground.


But now ASUS has made things official, releasing ET2002 and ET2002T, and ET2203 and ET2203T product details and technical specifications which confirm the improvements on earlier EeeTop models.

Like the earlier EeeTop models (which sported a 15.6in 16:9 aspect screen with Intel's Atom N270, a 160GB SATAII drive), the new additions come in both standard and touchscreen versions but now there are two different screen sizes to choose from.


The ET2002 is the 20in model and is powered by an Intel Atom 330 Dual Core processor and NVIDIA ION chipset. The low power NVIDIA ION graphics card helps keep things compact yet high-def-powerful and with 2GB DDR2 memory, a 250GB or 320GB SATAII drive it'll be quick and spacious. The 511mm x 410mm x 53mm (20.1in x 16.1in x 2in) dimensions should see it fit into the snuggest nook and the 7.2kg weight (15.8lb) means changing locations shouldn't involve pulling any muscles.


The ET2203 is, unsurprisingly perhaps, the 22in model. An Intel Core 2 Duo processor T4300 or T6500 and Mobile Intel PM45 Express chipset provide its power base and an ATI Radeon HD 4570 graphics card (full HD 1080p) help the visuals flow smoothly. There's 4GB DDR2 memory and a choice of 320GB or very roomy 500GB SATAII drives. An SPDIF digital audio output gives improved external connection possibilities. Weighing in a little heavier at 8.9kg (19.6lb), its dimensions measure up at 548mm x 450mm x 48mm (21.5in x 17.7in x 1.8in).


The touchscreen version is identified by a 'T' after the model name, ET2002T for instance, and is ready and waiting for all that Windows 7 touchscreen interactivity can throw at it. In the case of the ET2203T buyers will also get the option of a Blu-ray optical drive.

There's little doubt that ASUS found a winner in its range of Eee PC netbooks, the excellent Eee PC 1005HA being a number one best-seller according to a recent article in eZine. Will the combination of top tech with ease of use and elegance bring ASUS another market leader?

Well, numerous manufacturers have been doling out all-in-one desktop computers for a good while now - the first one I remember drooling over was from Sony's VAIO range - and the momentum seems to be picking up pace of late. With HP, Acer, MSI, Shuttle and Sony all recently announcing new touchscreen all-in-one machines, ASUS just might find the competition very stiff indeed as the market becomes as overpopulated as that of the netbook.

Pricing and availability information is at best sketchy at the moment but the ET2002T can be seen with a price tag of €598,96 (about USD$854) on the French LDLC website. Elsewhere it's a case of wait and see.

gScreen 15.4-inch Dual-Display Spacebook Notebook

gScreen Spacebook integrates two full-size screens that sit side-by-side when needed, while users can also slide the displays together to view a single screen. The chassis is also built around a 15.4-inch design, but with significantly more bulk necessitated by the displays and sliding mechanism.


The notebooks will integrate Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 4GB of RAM and NVIDIA’s discrete GF900M GT graphics components. Customers will have a choice between several capacities of 7,200 rpm HDD, while battery options should include 6- and 9-cell variants.

gScreen expects to ship the first run by December through Amazon and other retailers. The Alaska-based company is also working on 13-, 16, and 17-inch units. Pricing is still unknown, although gScreen founder Gordon Stewart hopes to keep the cost under $3,000.
