The Top Show in Brazil 'Caminho Das Indias' Features All Things Desi

The latest hit television show in Brazil is all about India, and they adore it.

The show that may appear to be but is not a Bollywood blockbuster or one of Ekta Kapoor's soap dramas is Brazil's top soap opera.

Desi culture has found another welcoming spot in Brazil. The plot of "Caminho Das Indias" (India's Way) features an upper-caste girl that falls in love with a Dalit boy. The girl's family disproves of their relationship and tries to marry her off while the boy strives to keep their love alive.

Today, "Caminho" is Brazil's most watched show with 60 percent of the market share. India's ambassador to Brazil, B.S. Prakash has received a torrent of emails from Brazilians with a spark of interest in India and its caste system.

Said B.S. Prakash, "The show has sparked off a massive interest in Indian culture. People now use words like 'accha,' 'theek hai,' and 'Bhagwan ke liye,' (for God's sake) as common slang."

The show is set in Rajasthan and is close to being authentically Indian despite the actors being Brazilian and speaking Portuguese with the inclusion of scattered Hindi phrases like those above.

Caminho's producers tried to follow the ways of Bollywood in some episodes said Marcos Schectman, the director of Caminho to the Hindustan Times, "Like for instance, we don't show kissing scenes, we cut the scenes just at that pivotal moment."

Looks like Indian culture keeps on spreading, with an Indian themed hit show in Brazil, Desi culture is bound to take off elsewhere. Check out the clip from the show below, and watch the guy chase after the girl Romeo and Juliet style.
