Nokia E52: The phone with stamina

We all know battery life is important, but few people would expect a powerful smartphone to offer eight hours of talktime, or a standby time reaching a whopping 23 days! But, Nokia has done just that with its latest Eseries model, the E52.

Following the announcement at Mobile World Congress of the Nokia E55, with its hybrid BlackBerry-Pearl like keypad, Nokia has launched a model with an ordinary numeric keypad. Text entry reverts to the traditional T9 predictive text system.

Expected to be sold for slightly less than the E55, the phone still has the same impressive specification - from the latest version of Series 60 (3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2) to a 3.2-megapixel camera and flash, as already seen on the Nokia E75.

The 116x49x9.9mm 3G phone (weighing 98g) has a 2.4-inch 24-bit QVGA display, HSDPA and HSUPA support, Wi-Fi, GPS, accelerometer, compass and stereo FM radio with RDS - but besides all the standard Series 60 functions you get on any Eseries model, the big improvement is in the battery department. The 1500mAh battery, combined with more effective power management, offers the user up to 8 hours of talktime or a staggering 24 days standby.

Of course, that means that one hour of talktime eats into the standby considerably - but few people will ever put the standby time to the test. What it does mean is knowing you're not going to need to charge it at any given opportunity; 3 or 4 days usage, even with email, web browsing and some navigation, should make barely a dent in the battery meter.

The E52 is due to go on sale in June, with pricing to be confirmed. Early predictions suggest it will be around €20 (£15) cheaper than the E55.
