Innespace's Seabreacher: cross between a dolphin and a PWC

Gizmag covered this amazing dolphin-like watercraft almost three years ago. At that stage, the Seabreacher - a unique submersible vessel - was just a prototype. Now, you can own your own, make like Flipper, and dive, roll and jump while staying warm and dry in the comfort of the sealed cockpit. Oh, that is, if you have a cool USD$50,000 burning a hole in your wallet.

The two-seater Seabreacher can reach cruising speeds of 40mph and underwater speeds of 20mph and can dive to approximately 5ft for brief periods. However, the vessel mostly needs to stay a few feet below the surface in order for the snorkel to stay above water. If you happen to go too deep, the engine will lose power and, due to its buoyancy, the vessel will return to the surface. There is also the chance that it will pop up backwards if you have attempted to dive too deeply and too steeply.

Designed to be operated both in fresh and salt water, the Seabreacher can be launched easily from a conventional boat ramp using a custom-built trailer.

If you tend to be a little claustrophobic, the vessel can be operated with the canopy opened and still maintain full speed above the water. Otherwise, you can be secure in the knowledge that the cockpit and engine area are kept completely watertight due to the pneumatic aircraft seals that are inflated by the pilot. If any water happens to enter, it is automatically pumped out by bilge pumps.

The Seabreacher was designed by Innespace, a California-based watercraft design company.

“After over ten years of prototyping, we have really developed a design that is very intuitive to drive, safe, and easy to service,” said company co-owner and designer Rob Innes. “We want our customers, many of whom live overseas, to feel comfortable purchasing our vessels.”

Innespace is currently selling custom-built Seabreachers with prices starting at USD$48,000. A more expensive customized version could include a tinted canopy, underwater viewports, electronics and instrumentation package and customized upholstery and will set you back approximately USD$68,000. You will also need to add from USD$3,000-$6,000 for shipping costs.

Toshiba applies for BDA admission, Blu-ray players and laptops coming soon

We'd already heard that Toshiba -- the outfit best known for solidly backing HD DVD during the two-year format war of the early 21st century -- was preparing to swallow its pride and kick out a Blu-ray player by the year's end, but now it's official.

The outfit just announced moments ago that it has "applied for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) and plans to introduce products that support the Blu-ray format." Sadly, Tosh doesn't bother to mention exactly what kinds of BD-capable wares it hopes to produce, nor is it ready to disclose product launch time frames. We'd tell you exactly how it wants us to just be patient and all, but you're probably better off hearing it directly from the horse's trap:
"In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA. Toshiba aims to introduce digital products that support the Blu-ray format, including BD players and notebook PCs integrating BD drives, in the course of this year. Details of the products, including the timing of regional launches, are now under consideration. We will make announcements in due course."

How sports cars make men macho

Women have long mocked the male obsession with fast cars, querying how a machine can make you feel more of a man.

But now scientists have found proof that sports cars really can make men feel more macho.

Going for a spin in an £80,000 Porsche sends testosterone soaring, a study found, but driving a clapped-out Toyota has the reverse effect.

Driving men wild: Fast cars like this Porsche 911 send testosterone levels soaring

The Canadian researchers said it seems that men, like peacocks fanning their tails, believe the conspicuous displays are the best way to grab a female's attention.

Writing in the journal Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, they said: 'Men use their cars to advertise their wealth. They consider them as extensions of themselves: they feed them, bathe them, observe their age and nurse them.

'They believe that owning the right car is akin to possessing a powerful sexual charm that renders them irresistible to women.

'Through their lurid displays of wealth, Porsche owners signal to others that they could bear substantial financial costs.'

The 'world's toughest' mobile phone that can survive 60C heat...

Have you accidentally broken your phone by dropping it down the toilet, knocking it off a window ledge or leaving it in the oven? Okay few people will have done the last one, but Land Rover claim it's new S1 phone can survive all three.

They have teamed up with Sonim Technologies to launch what has been dubbed the 'world's toughest' mobile.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes shows off his S1 Land Rover mobile. It can work in temperatures as cold as -20C and hot as 60C

In tests the £299 mobile was found to be impervious to dust, dirt, shocks and drops from 6ft in the air onto concrete.

Land Rover claim it is completely waterproof to a depth of one metre for up to 30minutes and can stand the pressure of almost 100lbs.

Unveiled by Sir Ranulph Fiennes on his return from Mount Everest last month, the handset is equipped for the explorer.

It is being sold with the tagline: 'The first mobile phone rugged enough to be called a Land Rover.'

The rugged mobile, which has gone in sale in Tesco today, can be used in extreme temperatures. It should work in -20C conditions to a sweltering 60C. It can even survive short bursts of 100C heat.

While it isn't the most streamlined of phones, the S1 Land Rover does come with a 2MP waterproof camera with flash, built in GPS, torch light, FM radio and WAP browser.

It also has an extra-long battery life with over 1,500 hours of standby time and 18 hours of talk time - useful in case you get lost in the jungle. There are extra-loud speakers for use in extremely noisy environments.

Lindsay Weaver from Land Rover said: 'Like our vehicles this phone is extremely capable and will work in the toughest of environments.'

And should the unthinkable happen and it does break down, the phone comes with a three-year unconditional guarantee.

The handset is on sale in Tesco stores and tescocontractphones.com in July. It is also available from landroverphone.co.uk and gomobileuk.com

2 million pre-orders already for Samsung Jet

Samsung's latest addition to the mobile family, the Jet S8000, has already gained two million pre orders according to the company.

This means it's likely to eclipse the success of the Tocco range as well as usurping the reach of the Omnia flagship brand as well.

The likes of LG, with its Arena, have also performed well on pre-order, though not reaching the level Samsung has with the new Jet.

It's currently unclear whether these figures take into account the countries, such as the UK, which already have the phone available for purchase, and for not too many notes either.

Fastest in the west

The new Jet, with its 3.1-inch VGA AMOLED touchscreen has been dubbed the fastest phone on the market at the moment thanks to an 800MHz processor chugging away under the hood.

However, some have been quick to criticise the new phone, dubbed 'Smarter than Smartphone' by the Samsters, as its TouchWiz proprietary UI is a little under powered for some tastes.

Still, that hasn't deterred Samsung labelling the phone 'better than the iPhone' so it will be interesting to see if it sells as well around the globe.

Google Wave: Multifunctional Tool To Communicate

Google has unveiled its new tool, Wave, a little surprise. Yet the proponents of this project will ensure that Wave “to make obsolete all the tools of communication.” Explanations. Wave’s ambition is great: it is in fact an online messaging “improved”, ie functions with well-known but also new. The Wave of Google is to centralize under a single interface manager for discussion and a loigiciel sharing of content (documents, applications, multimedia …). Obviously, Wave will be greatly boosted by the other services developed by the U.S. firm (Google Maps, Google Earth …), all in an effort to establish a sort of central station where the user has all the tools of communication network provision.

But the great strength of this project is that it be developed as open source, and can therefore be enhanced by users themselves. 01.net website gives further details about the technical operation of the structure. Meanwhile, we note that Google wants Wave allowing everyone to customize and expand as needed platform availability. In short, Google is banking on a collaborative, social and extensible, with tools that build on current work on the web (Twitter, Facebook …).

However, to judge the quality of services and real opportunities offered by Wave, it will be that users take the platform under control! It should be possible before the end of the year, non-official source. Not to worry, you can (re) discover a presentation on Google Video Wave of Google I / O 2009 Keynote.

Warning : Nothing Is Ever DELETED On The Internet !!

It's always fun to write about research that you can actually try out for yourself.

Try this: Take a photo and upload it to Facebook, then after a day or so, note what the URL to the picture is
(the actual photo, not the page on which the photo resides), and then delete it. Come back a
month later and see if the link works. Chances are: It will.

Facebook isn't alone here. Researchers at Cambridge University (so you know this is legit, people!) have found that nearly half
of the social networking sites don't immediately delete pictures when a user requests they be removed. In general,
photo-centric websites like Flickr were found to be better at quickly removing deleted photos upon request.

Why do "deleted" photos stick around so long? The problem relates to the way data is stored on large websites:
While your personal computer only keeps one copy of a file, large-scale services like Facebook rely on what
are called content delivery networks to manage data and distribution. It's a complex system wherein data is copied to multiple
intermediate devices, usually to speed up access to files when millions of people are trying to access the service simultaneously.
(Yahoo! Tech is served by dozens of servers, for example.) But because changes aren't reflected across the CDN immediately,
ghost copies of files tend to linger for days or weeks.

In the case of Facebook, the company says data may hang around until the URL in question is reused, which is usually
"after a short period of time." Though obviously that time can vary considerably.

Of course, once a photo escapes from the walled garden of a social network like Facebook, the chances of deleting
it permanently fall even further. Google's caching system is remarkably efficient at archiving copies of web content,
long after it's removed from the web. Anyone who's ever used Google Image Search can likely tell you a story about clicking
on a thumbnail image, only to find that the image has been deleted from the website in question -- yet the thumbnail remains on Google
for months. And then there are services like the Wayback Machine, which copy entire websites for posterity,
archiving data and pictures forever.

The lesson:Those drunken party photos you don't want people to see? Simply don't upload them to the web, ever,
because trying to delete them after you sober up is a tough proposition.

Intel MID for internet Access.. WoW...!!!

Even hard to say how many times we heard the beautiful promises about the MID (Mobile Internet Device - portable devices for Internet access), but did not see any live ones. Competition these devices with a diagonal of up to 7 inches, as stated in the past «clarification» Intel, which has invented the concept of this gadget, now a netbuki, internet tablet, and, of course, different QWERTY-phones with large displays (eg, Nokia E90, HTC Touch Pro). But this concept, developed by Czech designer Jan Rytirom (Jan Rytir) looks very healthy and, in our opinion, will go down in history even if not realized in the «iron». QWERTY-keyboard equipped with a trackball, in the end, next to the stereo speakers are 7 user-customizable buttons. The device is equipped with 2 ports USB, standard connectors for connecting a microphone and headphones, and the card reader for memory cards format SD. Complements the picture of a widescreen OLED-display, and operates all facilities managed by the platform Intel Atom.

COOL-ER e-reader Idea

The idea came after he began an online digital bookstore and had quickly sold out of a batch of Sony Reader devices. He realised there was demand for the e-readers but could not get Sony to guarantee supplies. He also thought he could improve on the design.

There are eight different colours and eight different languages available for the device, giving the Cool-er more international appeal. The screen uses the same E Ink technology as the Kindle and looks slightly larger. There is a rechargeable, removable battery, a memory card slot and a gigabyte of onboard memory. A headphone socket allows music and audio books to be enjoyed, just like the Kindle.
Company founder Neil Jones describes it as the "iPod moment that e-readers have been waiting for," calling the device the first of its kind to be designed specifically for the non-technologically inclined reader in mind.
